Homemade Vanilla Extract

Never buy vanilla extract again! It’s super easy to make with just 2 ingredients.

Yield: 6 8 oz bottles

Equipment

  • 6 8 oz glass bottles

Materials

  • 64 oz 80 proof vodka any brand
  • 30 vanilla beans

Instructions

  • Clean/sanitize bottles and lids
  • Slit open the vanilla beans from end to end, but not removing the tips
  • Place 3-5 (more is better) vanilla beans in each 8oz bottle
  • Fill the bottles with the vodka all the way to the top
  • Close lids tightly
  • Store in a darkened place, like a cabinet or pantry
  • Keep closed for at least 2 months
  • Give the bottles a gentle shake weekly during this time to help the vanilla to disperse

Notes

  • This vanilla extract can be ever evolving. As you use it, feel free to add more beans and top off with vodka. You’ll never run out!
  • For a twist on a traditional vanilla extract, use bourbon, rum or brandy in place of vodka ( or any spirit that is 80 proof, or 40% alcohol).
  • This makes a lovely holiday or housewarming gift!
